Frequently Asked Questions

Which direction is Mecca from my location?
The Qibla direction depends on your geographic location. Click "Use My Location" above and this tool will calculate the exact compass bearing from your coordinates to the Kaaba in Mecca (21.4225°N, 39.8262°E). For example, from North America the Qibla is generally northeast, while from Southeast Asia it is west-northwest.
How do I find Qibla direction without a compass?
You can use the sun: it rises in the east and sets in the west. If you know the Qibla bearing from this tool, orient yourself using the sun's position. You can also use landmarks, Google Maps to face Mecca, or ask at a local mosque. Our tool provides the exact degree bearing so you can align with any reference point.
Why does Qibla direction vary by location?
The Qibla is calculated as the shortest great-circle path from your location to the Kaaba. Because the Earth is spherical, this path changes depending on where you are. Someone in New York faces northeast while someone in Tokyo faces west-northwest, even though both are heading toward the same point in Mecca.
What if I pray facing the wrong direction?
If you made a sincere effort to determine the Qibla and prayed in the wrong direction unknowingly, your prayer is valid according to most scholars. Allah says: "And to Allah belongs the east and the west. So wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah" (Quran 2:115). However, you should make reasonable effort to find the correct direction.
